WUMS APDA | Virtual Training Event 2022

Incremental Systems

IncSys hosted members of the Wisconsin & Upper Michigan American Power Dispatchers Association (WUMS APDA) for their annual two-day tSpring raining event in March 2022.

PowerSimulator® was used as the focal point for training the concepts and evaluating the participants as they took action to respond to contingencies.

Anticipating Generation/Transmission Emergencies and Preventing Equipment Damage delivered Continuing Education Credits, and improved operator skills to:

  • Prepare to respond appropriately to multiple contingency events
  • Utilize existing tools and knowledge to address simultaneous transmission and/or generation emergencies
  • Determine and take action when applications fail to solve correctly

IncSys hosted the event remotely from Washington State and California by creating a virtual environment in a Zoom classroom. Participants broke into small groups and worked as teams in separate breakout rooms as they focused on assigned simulation exercises. Instructors David Wilke and Calvin Kaiser interacted with each group, taking on the Reliability Coordinator role at times to increase the realism and to practice communications requirements.

Over the two days of training, students responded to compounding transmission and generation emergencies. They also roleplayed as neighboring Balancing Authorities to coordinate restoration and synchronization of islands. When applications were simulated to solve incorrectly, the class evaluated and took actions based on available system data and calculations.

Short lectures prior to each exercise provided background information and demonstrations on the simulator. The hypothetical model CASCADIA was used to illustrate concepts and preview actions the participants would take during their simulation exercises.

Following each exercise, groups were given the opportunity to debrief their decisions and discuss their actions and key takeaways as a class.

WUMS APDA 2022 Participants respond to “What did you like best about this class”?

I found PowerSimulator to be most useful because I tend to learn better in a hands-on environment.

The instructor Dave Wilke. I love it when real life and personal experiences are shared.

The renewable generation section was welcome because it is so new and we have so much of it coming online.

The real-life stories from Dave were great!
