PowerSimulator™ 5 > Enhanced with the system operator in mind
With NERC and FERC mandating a systematic approach to training, power system simulation and training requirements have increased over time. PowerSimulator™
has evolved in step and is now available with a standard web-based interface to make your simulation experience faster and easier. The PowerSimulator™ 5 allows you to access your simulator model or training exercises from anywhere over the web. The same great user-oriented PowerSimulator™ has been enhanced with new navigational tools and training features, all with rock solid reliability.
For the system operator, the PowerSimulator™ 5 upgrade marks a major milestone in ease of use, speed, reliability, navigability, and applications for simulation based
training.
More than 50% of all current NERC certified system operators are trained using PowerSimulator™. We have listened to your feedback and included this in the new version. Realistic, real-time, system specific simulation is now affordable for even the smallest transmission operators and balancing authorities with as little as 100 MW peak load.
Upgrade Summary
Improved Performance
- Higher resistance to freezes even with slow/poor connections, multiple sessions, or large system models
- PowerSimulator™ runs more smoothly and reliably than ever using a standard web interface
- Dialog windows (e.g. breaker control, sync-scope) now open within the browser and are easier to use, resulting in fluid and efficient operations
|
Advanced Instructor Features
- Create your own Event Scenarios for unique, customized training
- Shared Base Cases allow for convenient starting points for routine exercises and customized scenarios
- Fault Simulator makes for realistic and advanced forced outage and switching exercises
- Shared sessions allow users to run large scale team-based drills
- Bad Data Point feature simulates incorrect field measurements and equipment positions
|
Enhanced Situational Awareness
- New Control Window: session box and info panel display more pertinent info
- Right click line-ends, transformers, and MVA pie charts for detailed info
- More extensive trending added to AGC Summary and OTS Island displays
- Simultaneously display data for multiple islands and control areas
- Plots of frequency, load, generation, ACE, Interchange, Losses, and CPS1 for each area are color-coded on the same graph
|
Enhanced Navigation Features
- More intuitive line-diagram navigation
- Click and drag the cursor and use the mouse wheel to navigate displays
- Within system map, Shift + click any station to open it in a new window
- New Return Button takes you back to your most recent view of the system map, no matter how many stations you have viewed
- Sort and Filter tabulars to efficiently control and monitor loads, units, etc.

Known for its ease-of-use and intuitive control of power system models, you can rest easy that all the core features of previous versions of PowerSimulator™ are still present. However, the new and enhanced features that are introduced in the PowerSimulator™ 5 upgrade interleave naturally and empower users to do more. It also represents years of development by IncSys and Powerdata - utilizing today’s most innovative technologies.
What You Will See
Window Image Upgrade - Control panel, tabulars, and equipment dialog boxes now have a more modern look and open more fluidly. Use of Pop-ups have been minimized.
Information Panel - Located under the control panel in the session window, this helpful feature gives the user real time information on system frequency, loading, and ACE - all of which can be changed for various islands or balancing areas.
Event Scenarios and Recorder - Custom user defined event scenarios can now be created using the new Event Scenario Recorder feature.
Filtering and Sorting - Many lists, such as station diagrams, and equipment listed in the tabulars can now be filtered easily, even by using substrings. This makes finding a particular substation or feeder, for example, in a large model even easier. Tabulars can also be sorted multiple times on different values.
Navigational Tools- All system maps and station diagrams can now be scrolled easily by clicking and dragging on black background areas. This helps users monitor the system more effectively. In addition, the user is visually alerted when an object can be modified as the cursor itself changes to a hand icon.
Charting Advances - Charting has been enhanced and can now be displayed on the bottom of any station diagram and tracks multiple islands. In addition, the AGC Summary and Electrical Islands Display utilize the advanced charting.
Streamlined Model Building - PowerSimulatorTM 5 utilizes the PSSE importer which rapidly builds power system models and displays. This means your model can be built and regional-drill ready in only 3 months. Maintenance and customization software allows your model to grow with your organizational needs.
Forced Outage/Fault Simulator - The forced outage simulator makes scenarios highly realistic with the ability to simulate a wide variety of equipment faults with and without stuck breakers.
Bad Data Simulator -Data points on the system can now be manually blocked to simulate faulty field measurement devices or a break down in SCADA connectivity. This will seriously challenge the skills of even the most experienced system operators.
